Use AI responsibly. Own the science.

You must understand and be able to explain the question, methods, analysis and conclusions. Named authors remain accountable for everything they submit.

AI or machine learning can also be the model you study: report the datasets, methods, verification and limitations, and label predictions accurately.

AI can assist preparation

Improve language, structure a script, prepare captions or translate your own explanation.
Help with code you inspect, test and verify against appropriate benchmarks.
Create clearly labelled explanatory diagrams or conceptual animations.

Check the output. Cite original sources and disclose the tools, tasks and affected material. The video abstract still requires an author’s own voice.

Keep evidence trustworthy

Never invent results, citations, experiments or contributions.
Do not present generated scenes as recorded data or validated solver output.
Do not apply generative enhancement or frame interpolation to material labelled as recorded data, simulation output or model predictions.
Do not submit work substantially performed by someone else as your own.

AI is not an author. Credit people according to their actual contribution and responsibility. Keep private information, unpublished work and other people’s data out of external AI services unless the necessary permission is in place. Follow your institution's AI policy and each tool's age rules.

What should an AI-use statement include?

Name the tool and version where available, what it did, which parts were affected and how you verified the output. This is a prompt to complete honestly, not a statement to copy unchanged:

Tools and versions: [what you used]
Tasks and affected material: [language, code assistance, captions, visuals…]
Human verification: [how you checked sources, code, results and visuals]
Author contributions: [what each person actually did]
Visual labels: [recorded data, simulation output, conceptual animation…]

Keep source data, code, parameters and relevant drafts so editors can ask how the work was produced.

Choose deliberately

A SciViD number. An optional external DOI.

You can post an eligible video preprint on SciViD without obtaining a DOI. These are different identifiers with different responsibilities.

An internal SciViD number identifies the posted, screened preprint and its version.
It is not a DOI and does not mean the work is peer reviewed.
Submit corrections or a later version to SciViD. Earlier versions and dated changes remain part of the version history.

OPTIONAL EXTERNAL RECORD

A DOI from a repository such as Zenodo

Authors choose whether to deposit the manuscript externally and provide the resulting DOI to SciViD.
The repository assigns the DOI. SciViD links the record you supply; it does not issue or manage that external DOI.
Authors are responsible for the exact text, files, authorship, affiliations, licence, permissions and public metadata they publish externally.

Pause before you publish an external DOI record.

Treat the deposit as a lasting public record. Read the final PDF, agree the author order and licence with all co-authors, check references and results, and obtain the required supervisor, institutional and guardian approvals.

Zenodo permits metadata edits and supports linked new versions with their own identifiers. Published-file corrections and removal follow its repository rules. Even a removed record can leave an archival citation or “tombstone” page. Public names and metadata may remain discoverable.

Check the repository’s current instructions before clicking Publish. SciViD cannot edit or erase an external repository record. A DOI provides a persistent identifier; it does not establish peer review or validate the findings.

Already have a DOI, or want to update the manuscript?

Provide the existing DOI for the same manuscript version rather than creating a duplicate deposit. A DOI for a related dataset or journal article is a separate record. Use the appropriate version-specific DOI when referring to an exact text. Significant file updates may need a new version; metadata editing is different from changing published files. Follow the repository’s rules and keep the SciViD and external records linked accurately.

Before any public posting, check institutional, confidentiality, intellectual-property and intended journal requirements with your supervisor. An external deposit does not guarantee acceptance by SciViD or a journal.

Use the student form. Editors check format, originality, sources, permissions and consent. Respond to any requested revisions.

Post and explain

Accepted items appear with an identifier, version and preliminary status. Screening is not peer review.

Eligibility, authorship and consent

Senior high school students (normally grades 10–12 or equivalent; grade 9 with a teacher’s or mentor’s recommendation), undergraduate students and master’s students can submit.
Individuals or teams of up to four. List contributions honestly; contact the editors about larger collaborations.
Students are the authors. A teacher or mentor is acknowledged with their role, or included as a co-author when their intellectual contribution and accountability justify authorship.
For each author under 18, obtain written student and parent/guardian consent for posting, the student’s voice and the CC BY 4.0 licence. Upload the signed consent as instructed in the form; SciViD confirms with the guardian before posting.
For under-18 authors, keep faces and personal contact information out of public files. A guardian may request withdrawal from SciViD and removal of the student’s personal details; an external DOI record is governed separately by its repository.

Before you submit: the integrity and permissions checklist

All authors approve the exact work, author order and truthful affiliations.
Claims match the source data; assumptions, uncertainty and missing validation are stated.
References are checked against original sources, including DOI checks where available.
Figures are your own or lawfully reused with attribution and the required permissions. Create new figures from underlying data/equations when appropriate.
Required ethics, safety, supervisor, institutional and consent approvals are in place.
The AI-use statement and visual labels are complete, and private/confidential information has been reviewed.
All authors agree to CC BY 4.0 posting, with any permitted third-party material marked separately.

Founder-mentored projects are screened by a second editor where available, and otherwise carry a conflict-of-interest note.

Submit the manuscript first if your video is still in preparation. Include your programme and year in the author list, for example “BSc Year 3” or “MSc Year 1”.

Posting is free. SciViD Studio production is an optional, separate paid service and does not influence screening or posting. For authors under 18, Studio requests and payments are arranged by a parent or guardian.

A few useful answers.

Can I submit coursework or a thesis project?

It may be suitable if it meets the submission requirements and the work is genuinely yours. Get the necessary supervisor, co-author and institutional permissions before sharing assessed, confidential, sponsored or thesis material. Ask the editors if the format or length needs adapting.

Who fills in the form?

Students aged 18 or over may submit directly. A teacher, mentor or parent/guardian manages submission for younger students. Research supervisors can use the Mentor role. The form’s author list accepts the programme and grade/year; an academic sign-off is still required.

Do I need a DOI or a paid production service?

No. An external DOI and professional Studio production are optional. A suitable manuscript and author-voiced video abstract are still required for posting, together with the relevant checks, permissions and consent.

Can our school or group learn how to get started?

SciViD offers a free 45–60 minute online workshop for high schools, colleges and science clubs on planning a real research project, checking sources and using AI honestly. Posting a finished project remains optional and subject to the submission checklist.
